Chia seeds have recently gained attention as a healthful addition to your diet. Its beneficial nutrients include fiber, plant based fatty acid, protein, and additional vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc.
Chia seeds come from a plant that is a member of the mint family. It originated from Central America, was a staple of the Aztec diet and for centuries have been an important crop of Mexico, Central and South America.
The chia seed has a mild taste and can be eaten raw, sprinkled on food or mixed into a smoothie. Because of its high fiber content, chia seeds absorb liquid and turn into a gel-like substance. Mix with almond milk or fruit juice, let it sit for about 15 minutes and voila, you have a chia pudding.
